Tire Safety Considering Condition & Age
Simple tire checks now can prevent big problems down the road.

At Automotive Magic, we’re big believers in staying ahead of problems before they leave you stranded—or worse. One of the most important (but often overlooked) safety checks you can do is right under your car: your tires.
Whether you’re preparing for a long road trip or just running errands, the condition and age of your tires directly impact your vehicle’s safety and performance. Here’s what you need to know to drive with confidence.
Tread Wear: More Than Just Bald Tires
Your tire’s tread is responsible for gripping the road—especially in rain, snow, or uneven surfaces. When the tread wears down, traction decreases and your risk increases.
Quick DIY test:
Insert a penny into the tread with Lincoln’s head upside down.
If you can see the top of his head, it’s time for new tires.

Uneven Wear Could Signal Bigger Issues
If one side of your tire is wearing faster than the other—or the wear looks patchy—it might be a sign of:
- Misalignment
- Suspension problems
- Improper tire pressure
At our Kenvil shop, we use state-of-the-art alignment equipment to diagnose and correct these issues, helping you get the most life (and safety) out of your tires.
Tires Don’t Just Wear—They Age
Even if your car sits in the driveway more than it drives, tires can still age out of safe use. Over time, rubber breaks down due to heat, UV exposure, and general oxidation.
Most tire manufacturers recommend replacing tires every 6–10 years, even if they appear to have decent tread left.
Pro tip:
Look at the sidewall. The last 4 digits of the DOT code show the week and year of manufacture.
Example: 3219 means the tire was made in the 32nd week of 2019.

Visual Warning Signs to Watch For
If you notice any of the following, come see us ASAP:
- Cracks or dry rot
- Bulges in the sidewall
- Embedded objects like nails or glass
These issues can weaken tire structure and lead to sudden failure at high speeds.
Why Tire Safety Is Non-Negotiable
Tires in poor condition reduce your ability to:
- Stop quickly
- Maneuver in emergencies
- Maintain control on wet or uneven roads
- At highway speeds—or in bad weather—worn or aged tires can make a critical difference.
