EV Fees in NJ?
Here's What You Need to Know (And Why It Matters)

At Automotive Magic, we’re seeing more of you come in with electric and hybrid vehicles—and we love it. Whether you made the switch to help the environment, lower your fuel costs, or embrace new technology, we know your decision came from a thoughtful place.
That’s why we want to keep you informed—not just about your vehicle’s maintenance, but also the rules and regulations that come with owning one. And if you're driving a fully electric vehicle in New Jersey, there's something new you need to know about your registration costs.
What’s Changing?
Starting July 1, 2024, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission has added a new registration fee for electric vehicles—and it’s a big one:
$250 per year for all-electric vehicles, increasing by $10 annually until it reaches $290 by 2028.
If you’re registering a new EV, you'll be asked to pay four years’ worth of that fee upfront. So, if you're buying and registering between now and June 30, 2025, that’s an additional $1,000 tacked on at the time of registration.
This is part of a larger effort to make sure all drivers are contributing to road maintenance—since EVs don't use gas, they also don’t contribute to the state's gas tax, which is how New Jersey traditionally funds things like pothole repairs and infrastructure upkeep.
We know—it kind of stings, especially when you thought you were doing something good for your wallet and the world.
What About Hybrids?
Good news (for now): hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles are not currently subject to this additional registration fee in New Jersey.
But we’d still recommend keeping an eye on how policies evolve. As EV and hybrid adoption grows, more adjustments may come down the road, and we’ll be here to keep you updated.
We’re in This Together
We get it—if you chose an EV to save money and make a positive environmental impact, this new fee can feel like a bit of a gut punch. You made a smart, forward-thinking decision, and now it feels like you're being penalized for it.
But even with this added cost, EV drivers often still save in the long run. No oil changes, fewer moving parts to break down, and no trips to the gas station add up over time. And don’t worry—we’re here to make sure your EV (or hybrid) stays running smoothly, efficiently, and safely for years to come.
If you ever have questions about what’s happening with your registration, or anything else vehicle-related, our team is always here to help.
At Automotive Magic, we’re more than just your local shop—we’re your neighbors, your advisors, and your pit crew. Whether you’re gas-powered, battery-powered, or somewhere in between, we’ve got your back.
