Beat the Heat with a Cool Ride

Shawn Gilfillan • May 29, 2024

As the temperatures rise and summer approaches, the last thing you want is for your car’s air conditioning (A/C) system to fail. There’s nothing worse than being stuck in traffic on a scorching day without a cool breeze to keep you comfortable. At Magic Lube and Rubber Auto Repair and Service, we understand the importance of a well-functioning A/C system, which is why we offer comprehensive A/C system checks to ensure your ride remains cool and comfortable all summer long.

The A/C System Check Process

Step 1: Initial Inspection

When you bring your vehicle to Magic Lube and Rubber for an A/C system check, the first step our skilled technicians take is to perform an initial inspection. We start by ensuring that the A/C compressor, the heart of the system, is turning on and operating correctly. The compressor is crucial as it circulates the refrigerant through the system, enabling the cooling process.

Step 2: Checking the Pressures

To diagnose the health of your A/C system, we use a specialized 134A freon machine. This machine hooks directly into the service ports of your vehicle’s A/C system, allowing us to accurately measure the pressures within the system. Proper pressure levels are essential for efficient cooling. If we find that the pressures are low, it’s an indicator that your system might be low on refrigerant, commonly known as freon.

Step 3: Evacuating the System

If low pressure is detected, we proceed to evacuate the refrigerant from your system. This involves safely removing the freon and measuring the amount we’ve extracted. Comparing this quantity with the manufacturer’s specifications helps us determine if there’s a significant discrepancy, indicating a potential leak or other issues. Once the old refrigerant is evacuated, the system is pulled into a vacuum to remove any remaining debris, moisture, and old oil from the system. This step is crucial as contaminants can affect the efficiency and longevity of your A/C system. After vacuuming, we perform a thorough leak test. Identifying and fixing leaks ensures that your system remains sealed and efficient.

Step 4: Refilling with Freon and Adding Dye

With the system cleaned and leak-free, we refill it with the precise amount of refrigerant specified by the manufacturer. Ensuring the correct amount of freon is vital for optimal performance. Additionally, we add a special dye to the refrigerant. This dye is invisible to the naked eye but glows under a UV light. If your A/C system develops a leak in the future, this dye will help us quickly and accurately locate the problem during subsequent inspections.

Step 5: Final Performance Check

After refilling the system, we conduct a final performance check to ensure everything is running smoothly. We verify that the A/C is blowing cold air as it should and that all components are functioning properly. This thorough check ensures you leave our shop with a reliable and efficient A/C system.
