Brian Kallok Helps Scouts Gear Up for Automotive Maintenance Merit Badge
Scouts earn Automotive Maintenance Merit Badge
When he's not making things run smoothly at the shop or ensuring our customers are happy, Brian Kallok is out in the community doing what he loves—teaching, mentoring, and helping others grow. On May 10th, Brian hosted a group of six enthusiastic Scouts—both male and female—for a hands-on training session to help them earn their Automotive Maintenance Merit Badge.
Held right here at Automotive Magic in Kenvil, the clinic was a mix of hands-on demonstrations and interactive discussions. The Scouts, ranging in age and experience, came from all over—including Newton, Oakland, Bedminster, and surrounding towns—eager to dive into the world of automotive care.
The Automotive Maintenance Merit Badge is more than just turning wrenches. It’s about developing confidence and practical knowledge that will last a lifetime. Under Brian’s guidance, the Scouts learned how to safely check and maintain essential fluids like oil, brake fluid, and coolant. They explored under the hood to identify parts like the battery, air filter, serpentine belts, and radiator, and even learned how to change a flat tire—a skill everyone should have in their back pocket.
But this wasn’t just about mechanics. In the spirit of the Scout motto “Be Prepared,” Brian also covered key topics related to vehicle ownership and emergency readiness. The Scouts discussed:
- The importance of keeping proper vehicle documents like registration, insurance, and inspection reports up to date and in the glove box.
- How to build and maintain an emergency roadside kit, complete with essentials like jumper cables, flashlights, blankets, and basic tools.
- The life-saving importance of always wearing a seatbelt—and making sure all passengers are buckled in, every time.
Brian has been hosting these sessions for several years and continues to be inspired by the curiosity and eagerness of each new group. “It’s about more than just cars,” Brian shared. “It’s about giving these young people the tools to be confident, capable, and safe—both now and when they become drivers themselves.”
To keep the Scouts fueled and focused, Brian also treated the group to hot chocolate and donuts—a now-traditional touch of hospitality that brings a smile to everyone’s face.
He’s quick to acknowledge that these workshops wouldn’t be possible without the support of Shawn and the entire team at Automotive Magic, who generously open the shop’s doors to welcome the Scouts in.
