It's Fall Car Care Awareness Month

Fall Car Care Awareness Month is upon us! As the crisp air and colorful leaves signal the approach of winter, it’s crucial to turn our attention to the care of our vehicles. It’s safe to say most Northeasterners are pretty used to the colder months and winter driving conditions, but how many of us seriously prepare our vehicles for a winter emergency? There are a few things to consider to help ensure a smooth and worry-free driving experience in the frigid months to come. Below is a list we put together including some essential items to keep in your car and important vehicle checks to consider for your convenience.

Part of winter preparation should include a good checkover of the entire vehicle, but there are a few key things we recommend checking before the season starts and throughout the season. One of the most important things to check before winter comes into full swing is the condition of the tires. If your vehicle’s tires are in poor condition we strongly recommend replacing them before winter starts not only for safety, but for peace of mind as well. We know having an extra set of winter tires can be a hassle andalthough they are superior for the season, a set of all terrains will do most vehicles just fine. We also recommend checking the windshield and rear wiper blades before the season and replacing themas needed. Poor visibility can be a nightmare and you’ll want the cleanest glass possible in the worst conditions. Other things to check before and throughout the season include washer fluid, coolant, oil, tire pressure, and all of the vehicle's lighting. This last one is especially important; visibility is one of the key elements to staying safe in a roadside emergency. Keeping the gas tank at least half full isn’t a bad idea either, we all know what the gas stations look like in the midst of a winter storm.

Another important aspect of preparing your vehicle for the winter includes keeping some emergency items within reach. Here are some of the things we recommend keeping in your car for those snowy nights.

- A small shovel

- Ice scraper/brush

- Matches or a lighter

- Jumper cables or a portable jump pack

- Flares

- Bright/reflective clothing

- First aid kit

- Flashlight

- Water/snacks

- Gloves

- Blanket

- Portable charger

- A bag okitty litter or sand to provide grip if you get stuck

By addressing these key areas and throwing a few extra items in your car, you can significantly reduce the chances of a dangerous and stressful experience on the road. Even though we are used to winter driving conditions, we all know emergencies can happen at any time and place, and all we can do is use what we’ve got and make the best of any situation. With a little preparation, you can navigate winter roads with confidence, knowing you’ve done your part to keep yourself and others safe. Embrace the season ahead, and drive safe! Happy Fall Car Care Awareness Month!
